Fight, Flight, Freeze | Reiki and nervous system regulation

Fight, flight, and freeze are terms I first learned decades ago while studying human behavior. Back then, these concepts lived mostly in textbooks. (I went to college pre-internet!) Today, they’ve become part of mainstream vernacular around mental health, wellness and the many practices and modalities that support nervous system regulation.

Often referred to as the “fight-or-flight response,” this is your body’s automatic, instinctive reaction to a real or perceived threat or stressor. It’s a built-in function of your nervous system, designed to protect you by preparing your body to either confront what’s in front of you or move away from it quickly.
This response system has evolved from a safety mechanism meant for physical danger and is now commonly triggered by emotional stress, conflict, or overwhelm in everyday life. Sometimes we can clearly identify the source or moment of onset—and sometimes we can’t.
At times, the response is linked to something subtle: an old pattern, a remembered feeling, accumulated stress, or even the body processing more than the mind is consciously aware of. It can build gradually in the background or arise suddenly, without an obvious cause.
FIGHT
May feel like:
Heat rising through the body, especially face and chest
Tight jaw, clenched teeth, or fists
Muscles feel rigid, "ready"
Heart pounding with a sense of pressure or intensity
Energy feels sharp, outward, explosive
Restlessness—pacing, needing to move
Inner experience: irritability, frustration, or a surge of anger
Body message: Do something. Push back. Take control.
FLIGHT
May feel like:
Rapid heartbeat and quick, shallow breathing
Lightheadedness or dizziness
Tingling in hands, feet, or face
Restless legs, fidgeting, inability to sit still
A buzzy, anxious energy moving through the body
Feeling like you need to get out right now
Inner experience: worry, urgency, racing thoughts
Body message: Get out. Move. Something isn’t safe.
FREEZE
May feel like:
Heavy, stuck, or immobilized feeling
Shallow or “held” breath
Numbness or lack of sensation
Coldness in the body or low energy
Slowed heart rate or muted physical response
Difficulty speaking or moving
Inner experience: blankness, disconnection, or “zoning out”
Body message: Stay still. Don’t engage. Wait it out.
While we often think of or experience these as big reactions, they also show up in subtle, everyday ways.
Moments of tension, withdrawal, or disconnection throughout the day are often micro-expressions of these same responses.
And they are information.
They point us toward our triggers, our pain points, and the places within us that may need care, attention, and compassion.
When we begin to notice and gently support these smaller signals in real time, we give the nervous system a chance to settle before it needs to escalate. In many cases, this can reduce the intensity or even prevent the larger expressions we tend to recognize more easily, like panic attacks, shutdown, meltdowns, or heightened anxiety spirals.
It’s not about stopping the response—it’s about meeting it earlier.
With awareness and support in those quieter moments, the body often doesn’t need to speak quite so loudly.
This is where Reiki can be so supportive. Reiki gently calms the nervous system, helping the body move out of survival mode and back into a state of safety and balance. It creates space to reconnect—with your breath, your body, and your intuition—so you can respond with more awareness and ease.
Often, after a Reiki session, people recognize that they’ve reconnected with a sense of center and calm that may have felt out of reach for some time. It’s not just relaxation—it’s a deeper remembering of what it feels like to be regulated.

With regular Reiki sessions, that experience doesn’t just come and go—it expands. You may find yourself able to access that grounded, steady state more easily and remain there for longer periods of time.
One of the most common reasons people return to Reiki consistently is because they begin to notice the impact beyond the session itself. They’ll often share that the sense of calm, clarity, and balance stays with them for days, sometimes weeks, and
even longer—gently supporting how they move through their everyday life.
Over time, this shift doesn’t stay contained to a single moment or session—it begins to ripple outward. The way you respond to stress, the way you relate to others, the way you make decisions, the way you care for yourself… all of it can be touched by this deeper sense of regulation and connection. It becomes less about returning to calm, and more about living from it.
