Today in meditation, my thoughts were swirling around the idea of finish lines.
There are parts of life with clear endings—goals, milestones, accomplishments we can point to and say “I made it.”
But more and more, I’m noticing how much of life doesn’t work that way.
There isn’t always a final destination.
No neat, tied-up ending.
No moment where everything is “done.”
Instead, it feels more like a journey…a choose-your-own-adventure unfolding in real time.
I have to be honest—for me, not having a clear finish line can feel disorienting… even a little uncomfortable. I’ve always been a goal-oriented, check-the-box kind of girl.
And yet…
Now, it also feels expansive. Open. Freeing.
In my Life Coaching and Reiki practice, people often come in wanting to figure out:
What’s next?
What’s the goal?
What am I working toward?
And sometimes, that clarity is exactly what’s needed.
But sometimes…the next step isn’t to figure anything out.
Sometimes the work is allowing. Being. Trusting what’s unfolding without needing to define it right away.
The question shifts from:Where am I going, and when will I get there?
To:What do I want this journey to feel like? What do I want to experience along the way?
As a coach and guide, sometimes we do create a finish line—a clear or even symbolic one—to give direction and momentum.
And one of the real nuances of the work is tuning in to when a finish line truly serves someone…and when it quietly becomes a limit.
